Alden, John (1599? -1687), One of the pilgrims, who was born in Southampton, England. He went to America aboard the Mayflower in 1620 and was a signatory of the Mayflower Compact. He was one of the founders of Plymouth, the first permanent English settlement in New England. In 1623 he married Priscilla Mullens Alden, one of the pilgrims. In 1627 or shortly thereafter, with the settlers of Plymouth, Miles Standish, he founded Duxbury, where he remained until his death. Alden is active in the affairs of the Plymouth Colony is to serve alternately as a deputy governor and member of the Duxbury. He lived longer than any other signatory of the Mayflower Compact.
Alden reputation is mainly due to the romantic history of the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, The Courtship of Miles Standish was written "(1858). In the poem, Alden, Priscilla Mullens deeply in love, he struck her on behalf of his timid friend Standish, who asks: "Why not talk with you, John?"

ReplyDeleteJohn Alden (1599? -22 September 1687) was one of the pilgrims who emigrated to America in 1620 aboard the Mayflower and founded Plymouth Colony. Originally recorded by William Bradford and others employed in their content of copper. Although this might have for England again the following year, he decided to remain in the new colony.
